Sandaru Malshan and Methuka Gunarathne Power Sri Lanka U17 Past Pakistan U17

SL U17 defeats PAK U17 by 99 runs in Multan after Pakistan failed to chase down a target of 240 in the opening match of their five-game One-Day series on Thursday. The hosts were dismissed for 140 in 39 overs, with Sandaru Malshan taking three wickets to help Sri Lanka secure a 1-0 lead.

Pakistan's chase never developed into a serious challenge, despite contributions from Mohammad Saim, Hamid Raza and Daud Tauqeer Rana. Saim scored 30 from 47 deliveries, Raza added 28 and Rana made 26, but the middle and lower order could not build on those starts. Arsalan Hassan scored 17 as Pakistan's innings ended well short of the target.

Malshan was Sri Lanka's most effective bowler, conceding just 16 runs in seven overs while taking three wickets. Thisanga Perera dismissed two batters, and Tharuka Samanjith, Mahiru Kodithuwakku and captain Shashith Bandara took one wicket apiece.

The visitors had established their advantage earlier through a composed innings from Methuka Gunarathne. The opener scored 77 off 92 balls, laying the foundation for Sri Lanka's total of 239/6 after Pakistan captain Azan Ahmed elected to field. Gunarathne was eventually dismissed by Fahad Iqbal in the 33rd over.

Sri Lanka's opening stand produced 88 runs, with Yenula Hewavitharana contributing 36. Gunarathne followed that partnership with another productive stand, adding 67 runs with Reshon Solomans, who made 42 from 59 deliveries. Bandara scored 21 and Malshan contributed 20 to help the visitors finish with a competitive total.

Pakistan's Mohammad Ihsaan returned the best figures for the home side, taking three wickets for 43 runs in his 10 overs. Fahad supported him with two wickets, but Sri Lanka's batting effort ultimately proved sufficient for a comfortable victory.

The teams will return to the Multan Cricket Stadium on Saturday for the second One-Day match, with Pakistan aiming to level the series.
