Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, 25, tragically died in a late-night car accident near Zamora in northwestern Spain, the Spanish Civil Guard confirmed today by The Guardian.

The incident occurred on the A-52 highway somewhere around 00:30 CET, when the two were travelling in a Lamborghini, and a likely tyre blowout veered the vehicle off the road and erupted into flames. Despite the swift arrival of emergency services, the two brothers were sadly pronounced dead soon after.

Liverpool welcomed Jota in 2020 and played 182 games, scoring 65 goals over his time with the team. He won the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and UEFA Nations League during his tenure.

For Portugal, he earned 49 caps and contributed to their Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025. Just days earlier, he married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso and was a devoted father to their three children.

Global tributes pour in

Liverpool FC expressed that they are “devastated” and have requested privacy for the family.

UEFA announced a minute’s silence before their Women’s EURO matches this week.

Portuguese PM Luís Montenegro said, “We have lost two champions,” calling their deaths “irreparable losses”.

Cristiano Ronaldo posted on X: “It doesn’t make sense… We will all miss you. Rest in peace, Diogo and André”.

Tributes have also come from Jamie Carragher, LeBron James, Rafael Nadal, and clubs including Man Utd, Wolves, and FC Porto.

At Anfield, supporters have gathered to lay flowers and tributes beneath lowered flags. Local leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, visited the stadium, describing the news as “absolutely heartbreaking”.

Investigations by Spanish authorities are to finalise the accident report.

Official tributes to continue: moments of silence and black armbands across upcoming football fixtures.

Club actions: Calls are growing for Liverpool to retire Jota's #20 shirt in honour of his legacy.

The loss of a father, husband, and footballing star has left a void in Liverpool, Portugal, and the global football community. His brother André’s death exacerbated the tragedy. While tributes and investigations continue, both fans and teammates remember Jota’s warmth, talent, and joy both on and off the field.
