The South Africa vs West Indies Super-8 fixture was one of the most thrilling contests of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

A win against the mighty West Indies helped South Africa become the second team to qualify for the semi-finals after England. This is the first time that they have qualified for a T20 World Cup knockout stage in a decade.

South Africa vs West Indies clash took place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua on 24th June.

The Proteas had restricted the co-hosts to 135-8 in 20 overs after winning the toss and choosing to bowl first.

Chasing a revised target of 123 runs in 17 overs, since the match was affected by rain, the Proteas reached home in 16.1 overs for the loss of seven wickets.

With this crucial victory South Africa created an important record in their name. They have now won seven matches in a row during the ongoing event, the most by a team in a single T20 World Cup.

This record was previously held by Sri Lanka, who scored six wins in a row in the 2009 T20 World Cup.

The Lankans are tied with Australia who also won six matches in a row in the 2010 and 2021 editions of the T20 World Cup.

Marco Jansen played a critical unbeaten innings, scoring 21 runs off 14 balls to secure victory for his team. He hit a six on the first ball of the final over when they needed just five runs to win.

Although co-hosts West Indies were one of the favorites to qualify for the semi-finals, South Africa knocked them out of the tournament with their nail-biting victory.

Moreover, the Proteas have also topped their Super-8 group which means they are also likely to avoid India in the final four.

South Africa’s spinners got the best of the West Indian batting lineup as they were unable to even rotate the strike and that is what led to their eventual downfall.

Is luck siding with South Africa or is it their years long hard work that has landed them in a comfortable spot in the CWC 2024?
