Australia out & Afghanistan Storms Into Maiden World Cup Semi-final

Australia out & Afghanistan Storms Into Maiden World Cup Semi-final

After India, England, and South Africa had already qualified for the semi-finals, there were three teams in contention for the last T20 World Cup semi-finals spot.

Australia, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh had their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals hanging by a thread.

In a highly anticipated clash between India and Australia, things took a drastic turn as Australia had to book an early flight back home after losing to India by 24 runs.

Now the next two contenders were Afghanistan and Bangladesh who were scheduled to face each other on Monday, 24th June at the Arnos Vale Stadium, St. Vincent.

This high voltage match took place at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St. Vincent. Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bat first.

Thanks to Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 43 off 55 and Rashid Khan’s 19 off 10 balls, Afghanistan reached a decent total of 115 runs at the loss of 5 wickets.

When it was time for the second innings, rain interference began which is why the target was revised to 114 and one over was reduced.

Fortunately for Afghanistan, no Bangladeshi batsman apart from Liton Das was able to stay on the crease for long and thus, the whole Bangladeshi lineup could only manage to score 105 runs.

Bangladesh team’s failure to meet the target resulted in Afghanistan qualifying for the semi-finals for the first time in history.

Struck by happiness, shock, and profound joy, the Afghan players kept roaming in the stadium to soak in this historical moment.

Rashid and Co. danced their hearts out after knocking two teams with a single blow, and the celebrations are only likely to go on for longer.

Fazalhaq Farooqi, Afghanistan's weapon with the new ball, trapped Tanzid Hasan lbw with his third ball, making it his 16th wicket, which drew him equal with Wanindu Hasaranga for most wickets in a men's T20 World Cup.

After grabbing a berth in the train of semi-finals, Afghanistan’s next stop will be against India, the only team who has remained undefeated throughout the tournament.

Will Afghanistan be able to shock the world once more by defeating India and going straight to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final or will India comfortably move closer to grabbing their second T20 World Cup title?
